SCOPE & CONTENT:

Collection includes the archive of Ballard’s Photo Shop, Las Cruces, NM. Photos (1970s – 1990s) including weddings, anniversaries, school portraits, family portraits, local events, and misc. Business papers and manuals are also included in the collection. Personal photographs include those of Benito Juarez (glass negative) and Berroteran family photographs. 19 Aztec prints are also included in this collection.

BIOGRAPHY:

Enrique Berroteran was born on October 21, 1910, in Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1944 and served on the USS Moosehead as a photographer until 1945. He received the World War II Victory Medal, the American Area and the Asiatic-Pacific ribbons. After his discharge from the military, he moved to Las Cruces with his family and operated Rives Portrait Studio and Ballard's Photo Shop.

Mr. Berroteran was an active member of the Las Cruces community and participated in many different organizations, including the Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Boy Scouts of America, American Legion, NAACP, the Governors Colonel Aide de Camp, and the Liones de Noche Club. He was also the Lt. Governor in the Optimist Club and the Chairman of the Las Cruces Urban Renewal.

Mr. Berroteran passed on May 15, 2008, at the age of 97, in Las Cruces, NM. Victor Berroteran is the son of Enrique Berroteran, who owned and operated Ballard’s Photo Shop in Las Cruces, NM.
