BIOGRAPHY:

Prolific author, artist, teacher, curator, and speaker, Mary Carroll Nelson founded the Society of Layerists in Multi-Media (SLMM) in Albuquerque, NM, in 1982, to serve as a network for artists who express a holistic perspective. She has authored and contributed to numerous articles and books relating to Southwestern artists of the 20th and 21st century, including The Legendary Artists of Taos and The Threads of Memory: Spain and the United States. Her artwork has also been published in many different catalogs and magazines, and she has been invited to speak at many different venues over the years.

Mary Carroll Nelson holds a B.A. in Fine Arts from Barnard College, Columbia University, and an M.A. in Art Education from the University of New Mexico. She is an active member of the Albuquerque community, and was a member of the Albuquerque Arts Board, as well as a youth mentor. In addition to being an artist and writer, Mary taught first grade, elementary art, and remedial reading for 23 years.
