BIOGRAPHY:

Dr. Matray was born on December 6, 1948, in Evergreen Park IL. He attended Lake Forest College, IL, from 1966 to 1970, and earned a Bachelor of Arts with honors in European and American History. From 1971 to 1973, he attended the University of Virginia and earned a Masters of Arts, and in 1977, a Doctor of Philosophy in American History. In 1980, he joined the history department at New Mexico State University until his retirement in 2002. He subsequently joined the faculty at California State University, Chico (2002-2008). He has received numerous awards for his teaching, research, and service, as well as fellowship nominations.
His international experience comes from his service as a visiting scholar at the Graduate Institute of Peace Studies in Seoul, Korea, in 1990 and as an international newspaper columnist in Seoul from 2002 to 2004. Dr. Matray is the author of an extensive array of books, book chapters, and essays discussing the foreign relations between the United States and East Asia, and East Asia and the Cold War.
