BIOGRAPHY:

Rita Mary Kasch Chegin was born on June 23, 1917, in Ramona, South Dakota. She married John Joseph Chegin in 1946 and received her bachelor's degree from New Mexico State University in 1982. The couple moved to Las Cruces, N.M., where she worked for NMSU as an administrative assistant for the Alumni Office for 18 years.

After Mrs. Chegin retired from NMSU, she continued writing and editing, producing special events such as the Renaissance Fair and interviewing the elderly to record their oral histories for the Dream Catchers and the Pioneers organizations. She published a book about female pioneers in the Southwest, titled Survivors: Women of the Southwest, and produced Casa Feliz, a popular musical variety program for PBS station KRWG in Las Cruces. In 1997, Mrs. Chegin and her husband moved to Lynnwood, WA.

She and her husband moved to Wisconsin in 1997. Mrs. Chegin passed on March 2, 2003, in Edmonds, WA.
