SCOPE & CONTENT:

Color slides (approximately 1700) and color prints of wild flowers (blooming flora of the Southwest – New Mexico) and miscellaneous travel photographs; digital photographs of Johnny Cash during his military service, 1952; 45rpm records; veteran interview of CSM Howard R. Harrell.

BIOGRAPHY:

William Francis Harrell was born in Piggott, Arkansas on January 9, 1932. Following his graduation from Piggott High School in 1950, he joined the U.S. Air Force. He had an extensive career in the military and remained on active duty for 21 years followed by 9 years of retired reserve status. He retired as a Master Sergeant with thirteen medals plus the Misselman Badge.

William served as a radio operator and electronic technician in Germany, Spain and the states, completing his career as Superintendent of the Calibration Laboratory at Torrejon AFB, Spain. His “bunkmate” in 1952 was Country Western singer, Johnny Cash.

Following his military career, William worked for the NM Bureau of Land Management as an Electronics Technician and was a Communications Unit Leader on many forest fires throughout the states. He is currently retired and lives with his wife, Beth Marie, in Las Cruces, NM. William Harrell’s photographic collections reflect his extensive travels in the Southwestern United States and throughout the world.
