BIOGRAPHY:

John Richard (Dick) Lockman worked with agricultural, water, and building projects in Pakistan from 1949-1987. He was employed by the World Division of the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church. Dick received his BA from Carroll College, Waukesha, WI in May 1943, his BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Nebraska in 1949, and an MS in Irrigation Engineering from Colorado A&M (now Colorado State University) in 1954. From 1943-46 Dick served in WWII in the Engineer Combat Battalion, European Theatre of Operations.

From 1949-52 Dick worked in constructing water wells the Punjab and the Northwest Provinces of Pakistan. He returned to Pakistan in 1954 where, until 1972, he initiated and directed the Methodist Agricultural Extension Service in irrigated desert agriculture, specifically wheat, cotton, and fodder in the Punjab, as well as initiating the design and construction of some buildings.

Dick’s work led him to the Lahore area from 1973-1987 where he was the initiator and project director of an adaptive research project dealing with high protein and/or edible oil food crops in cooperation with national and international agricultural research organizations. He was a member of the Pakistan Society of Agricultural Engineers, the American Society of Agronomy, the Crop Science Society of America, the Soil Science Society of America, and the U.S. Committee on Irrigation and Drainage.

Dorothy Petersen married Dick Lockman in December 1953 in Elgin, Illinois. Dorothy graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1943 and from the Biblical Seminary of New York (now the NY Theological Seminary) in 1948.

From 1948-1953 Dorothy worked for the Lutheran Church with girls and women in Christian and secular educational projects in Southern India. After marrying and moving to Pakistan, Dorothy worked with women’s groups, did the accounting for the Agricultural Extension Project, and wrote for the Methodist Church publications. She worked for the TSA (Technical Services Association), a Christian social service agency in Lahore, helping in public relations for the women’s needlecraft section and the Centre for Mentally Handicapped children. She also coordinated philanthropic outreach for both the American Women’s Club of Lahore and the International Christian Fellowship.

Dick and Dorothy Lockman retired to Las Cruces, NM in 1987. Dick died in 1995. Dorothy passed away in 2013.
