SCOPE & CONTENT:

Artifacts, books, pamphlets, photos, films, and papers on ancient (pre-Columbian) weavings, pottery, and cultures of South America. Also marketing and guide materials from the Caribbean, South Pacific, African, and Asian countries; early 20th century materials on the Badlands National Park and Monument of South Dakota; agate collection.

BIOGRAPHY:

This collection represents Dr. Millard's fortunate life experience and travel to over 55 countries over his 55-year professional career. He was born in South Dakota. As a teenager working at the family's Cedar Pass Lodge in the Badlands of South Dakota, he attended ceremonies honoring his grandfather Ben Herbert Millard, who assisted Senator Peter Norbeck in establishing the Badlands as a National Park. He obtained a Bachelor's degree from Brown University in Providence RI, an MBA from the University of Minnesota in 1954, and a Ph.D from the University of Minnesota, in business, managerial accounting, and Latin American area studies.

In 1968, he became Deputy then Director of the U.S. Peace Corps in Peru and Uruguay. After his Corps service, he initiated an artisan import business, became a Marshall Field & Co. Commissionaire agent in Central and South America, taught marketing and management at Twin Cities colleges, and was contacted by UNDP to head various small industry evaluation mission in the Caribbean, South Pacific, Africa, and Asia. He also worked as a consultant for other international organizations: US AID, FRIDA, CARE, Inter-American Foundation, and Westinghouse-IRD.

Dr. Millard currently resides in St. Paul, MN. Patricia died in 2012.
